Chapter Eight

Paris Fights

Security at the MMA-Factory waved us through after Mayor Salgo called them. Nick and Claude arrived in time from their embassy visit to join us with the equipment bag. They would be our rear guard at the back of the arena along with Gus, Johnny and Jian. My Monsters would be spread amongst the small crowd of spectators. The main revenue for the fight would be Al Jazeera’s live pay-per-view streaming coverage of the fight. All the MMA-Factories coaches and members would be on hand to watch the fight, along with invited spectators.

Tommy liked the way our referee for the fight checked gloves and equipment closely before allowing us into the cage. He did the same with Efrain’s cage crew. Inside the cage, Tommy, Jess and Dev looked over the cage for any flaws or problems with the matting. They returned, satisfied the cage was in top shape. It seemed I would be fighting just another match with an opponent. Efrain may want me dead, but I didn’t see how he could achieve that objective. After a short introduction, the referee repeated the UFC rules, had us touch gloves and retreat to our opposite places in the cage. Efrain said nothing, so he figured to do his talking with fists and feet.

“It feels eerie in here after Boston and Las Vegas,” Tommy said. “Remember your work, DL. This guy doesn’t look like he goes down easy.”

“He attacks hard first,” Dev said. “Efrain has never fought five rounds.”

“Get him thinkin’ about his legs, DL,” Jess told me. “I know you want to box because of the match with Logan, but this guy’s huge. Cut him down a bit.”

“Okay, guys, I’ll get ‘er done.” Tommy put in my mouthpiece.

The crews left the cage. Our referee asked if we were ready. We acknowledged, and he started us. Efrain rushed me as Dev warned. With my speed, I worked on moving and kicking with maximum power to stop the guys who charged hard out of the gate. Efrain led with a flying right leg side-kick meant for my throat. I slipped right at the last second, crouching and landing a right leg kick on target – behind his left knee. It buckled, landing Efrain on his back hard. To his credit, he rolled quickly to his feet with only a slight hitch in his gait.

I moved on him, smashing another leg kick to the opposite leg. He tried a desperate combination but overextended his right hook. My counter left hook to the body nearly cracked his ribcage. That one hurt. He retreated while swinging away. I nailed him with another leg kick before he could get out of range. Efrain tried for a takedown. He didn’t have the speed. My elbow strike opened a gash at the top of his head. When he stumbled to the side of the cage while trying to fend me off, my side kick strike drove him into the cage. The round ended with me pounding his arms.
